Information related to the appeal
The Judgment, made on 10 July 2017, turning down CAAT’s claim was deeply disappointing. CAAT appealed and the hearing took place between Tuesday 9 and Thursday 11 April 2019.
Judgment, in CAAT’s favour, was made on 20 July 2019. The Government was told to retake on a lawful basis its export licensing decisions on extant licences, and not to issue any new ones, where the equipment might be used by Saudi Arabia in Yemen.
On 27 June the Government asked the Court of Appeal for permission to appeal to the Supreme Court and for a stay. On 9 July 2019 the Government was granted permission to appeal, but refused a stay. CAAT was granted permission to appeal on the two grounds on which it had lost.
Obtaining permission to appeal
- 5 July 2017 – an application for permission to appeal was made to the High Court for a ruling along with the judgment.
- 6 July 2017 – the UK government responded opposing the request for permission to bring an appeal.
- 24 July 2017 – Order from the High Court turning down CAAT’s and the Special Advocates’ requests for permission to bring an appeal. CAAT is now applying to the Court of Appeal for permission to appeal.
